Even under wraps we can tell a couple of things about this exciting new development from Cadillac. For one thing, we can tell this is going to be one sharp looking little ride and for another thing, we can see that the General Motor’s research and development team is taking some extra attention on creating this brand new electric version of the iconic Cadillac Coupe, and why wouldn’t they? Not just any production vehicle can be made to fit into the Cadillac family, especially since they are doing such a bang up job on recovering from a couple of models that just didn’t do too well overall. No, this one will be better and should capture the heart of everyone that is looking for a greener world and lower gas costs.
Cadillac made mention that they were going to be creating a production version of their appealing Converj concept over a year ago and not a peep has been heard about it again, until now. From what we can tell they have been doing a lot behind the scenes and this new version should hit the market as early as next year, or early in 2014. While the testers went to lengths to cover up the exterior, we do know a few things about the upcoming Cadillac ELR.
We know the Cadillac ELR will be based on a similar Voltec powertrain as the Chevy Volt is which is to be expected seeing the immediate popularity of this Chevy electric version. A four cylinder gas engine will be used for an onboard generator to bring power to the electric motor. While the concept form had a clear view of a solar paned glass room, we can’t see that in the prototype version though because of all the layers of black and white camouflage that was used to make sure we are kept guessing.
It will be exciting to learn more about the Cadillac ELR as it goes from prototype to owner’s driveways. We’ll let you know when we learn more about it.
