Fiat 500e Wins Road & Track’s Best Electric Car for 2013

With all electric vehicles on the market such as the Tesla Model S, it was surprising that the Fiat 500e won Road & Track’s Best Electric Car for 2013. But you have to stop and consider, while this car is on the tiny side, it delivers some undeniably fun to drive feature, including 111 horsepower that will run for 87 miles on a single charge. The regenerative braking system and handling also helped put this subcompact into the winners circle.

“It is deeply satisfying that Road & Track editors are so taken with the 500e,” said Jason Stoicevich, Head of FIAT Brand for North America, Chrysler Group. “The combination of modern Italian style, sporty feel and a zero-emissions powertrain makes the 500e a truly unique proposition in the marketplace.”

Road & Track stated that the Fiat 500e won this honorable distinction because it “Delivers big fun,” also because of the best in class single charge range, which while rated at 87 miles will actually get more in the city, up to 100 or more. The fuel economy is rated at 116 MGe for city and highway combined giving the 500e an annual fuel equivalent cost of $500. It also won due to having superior handling and unique blended braking system.

The saying “good things come in small packages” is obviously a true statement with the Fiat 500e. Fiat adds, “The Fiat Access smartphone app (compatible with iPhone and Android) further enhances the ownership experience, offering three years of connected services to manage charging via remote, track a driver’s energy use, locate the vehicle and nearby charging stations, while providing provides text-message and email alerts.”

With the unusual Italian styling, responsive driving experience and budget and planet friendly engineering, Road & Track may have made a good choice to name the Fiat 500e as the Electric Car of the Year.
