Will components of the Mustang that make it one of the world’s best selling cars do anything to push the success of the Ford Lincoln? This question has been bandied about before and so far nothing has come of it, but with the development started on the all new 2015 Ford Mustang has Lincoln developers chomping at the bit to get their hands on some of the pony’s components to add to their own design plans. This includes a particular interest in the rear wheel drive platform. Lincoln is definitely interested in taking that platform and adding it to their sedan.

Now the rear wheel drive platform that is in question is a four door platform that uses MacPherson front and independent rear suspension for its base, along with some underbody stampings. This is only being considered for the 2015 Mustang at this point and has not been officially chosen. Lincoln developers believe this would be the perfect platform to help push the Lincoln out of the doldrums it has seemed to be in for the last few model years. Ford has been promised to redesign it so it can once again climb to the top of the luxury sedan category that it helped to create year’s back. This new platform may just be the golden ticket for them to do just that.

While this is still speculation it sounds as if this new rear wheel drive platform might be something that could put Lincoln back in the running over its competition including the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, and Infiniti G. Many of the critics are saying that this might be the only way that the Lincoln brand could survive in the ever growing luxury sedan segment. We will keep an eye out to see if the speculation becomes official.
