A gorgeous red two door 1966 Volvo P1800S that just won’t quit has shown up in the news again. It made its first appearance back in 2002 when it entered the Guinness World Book of Records for a High Mileage Vehicle; this was the first record of this king. Then in 2007 it reappeared in the news when it passed the 2 million mile mark. Now, it’s only 34,000 miles away from reaching an unheard of 3 million miles. What’s even more amazing is that even though the engine has been rebuilt twice, it is all original and was rebuilt, never replaced.

Irvin Gordon is the man that owns this amazing coupe and you can tell it’s been a lifelong love affair between a man and his mobile. The miles he’s reached in this Volvo P1800S could have taken him around the globe 1,176 times. He paid $4,150 for this vehicle on June 30, 1966, at the age of 25. “It was a whole year’s salary,” he said. He paid an extra $10 for the am/fm radio, but thought air conditioning was too expensive of an option, so he didn’t get that feature and doesn’t seem to miss it as he’ll drive his beauty everywhere possible. “It’s just a car I enjoy driving,” he said.

“I don’t think (just) any car could do it,” said John Maloney, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. “It is a combination of a car beloved by his owner that has gotten Irv to this mileage.”

The video shows this little coupe and the proud owner in action. It is amazing what great shape this car is in. For the New York climate, it has held up amazingly well as a car that isn’t stored away for only sunny day use. “I have had coffee in every state,” Gordon said. “I am my own travel channel.”
