The North American subsidiary of Takata Corporation, TK Holdings Inc. has released its Safe TraK3 advanced electronic vision system to help combat drowsy driving in the commercial trucking industry.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently released the results of a study showing that drowsy driving is a contributing factor in 16.5 of fatal crashes in the United States.  Crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates more than 5,000 roadway fatalities each year are a result of driver drowsiness.

A Lane Departure Warning and Driver Alertness Warning system are both included in SafeTraK3 to warn commercial truck drivers if they are unintentional departing from their lane or driving erratically in their own lane.  Experts agree that both are prime symptoms of fatigue or drowsiness.  It is anticipated these types of systems will be made available soon on passenger cars for consumer use as well.

“Drowsy or inattentive driving is a very serious issue on our roadways,” said Kirk Morris, TK Holdings Inc. Vice President of business development and product management.  ”We believe the use of our SafeTraK products will help to reduce distracted driving in the commercial trucking industry.  Soon automakers and consumers will also recognize the exceptional value of these safety systems.”
