It’s obvious that German automakers, Volkswagen are in their element at the Geneva Auto Show and they showed up to give us a SHOW. The newest Volkswagen GTI was one of the vehicles all dressed up and ready to own the red carpet. This VW is the hottest Golf model ever and is ready for production in Europe. Here in America we will have to wait one more year, but from the sounds of it, the wait will be worth it.
Sure, the Volkswagen GTI is hot, but you have to keep in mind what it’s built for, stable, fuel efficient daily commuting. It hosts a direct injected 2.0 liter four cylinder that you can expect to get around 220 horsepower and 258 pound feet of torque with. Of course the United States version may turn out a little differently and there are options that will give you a few more horses, but this many in a compact is still a pretty assertive ride for the general driver. More than enough to keep up with traffic and still easy on the pocket book when it comes to gassing up.
You have to keep in mind that the Volkswagen GTI is in direct competition with the Ford Focus ST which comes out the gate with about 30 more horses than the GTI is listing at this point. We have hopes that Volkswagen will keep those numbers in mind because their intention is to become the largest automaker in the world and from where we are standing now, they are getting pretty close to that mark. So, you can count on an assertive drive with the GTI and all the cutting edge technology and sporty styling that will keep this hatchback in the competition to win “King of the Road” in its segment.
