Volkswagen replacing TDI with New EA288 Engine in Passat, Jetta, Golf and Beetle

Volkswagen has been a leader in diesel engine technology and apparently they have outdone themselves with the new EA388 engine. This is the most fuel efficient clean diesel engine yet and will replace the 2.0 liter TDI in both Audi models and the Volkswagen Passat, Jetta, Golf and Beetle line up, starting just next year. Sometime in the second half of next year the 2015 models with the new engine will be released. The expectation for the Volkswagen lineup is between 45 to 46 highway miles per gallon, although the official numbers for each vehicle have yet to be announced.

Oliver Schmidt, General Manager, Energy and Environmental Office, Volkswagen Group of America, reports in the press release that, “The Volkswagen Group is a leader in clean diesel technology. With the introduction of the new EA288 engine, we are excited that our family of TDI Clean Diesel vehicles is continuing to improve and will be even more clean, fuel efficient and powerful. “

The EA288 clean diesel engine is a turbocharged, common rail, direct injection four cylinder engine. You can expect it to offer around 150 horsepower which makes it more powerful than the TDI by around 10 horses. The pound feet of torque should be at around 236, so a pleasantly assertive car with plenty of power is something Passat, Jetta, Golf and Beetle can look forward to in their new rides. Along with the additional power, there is actually a decrease in regard to emissions. A complex exhause gas recirculation system has been added. This system has high pressure EGR and a cooled low pressure EGR. There is also an integrated water cooled intercooler with an EGR valve and intake manifold to improve the throttle response. These are just a few of the updates, additions and improvements that have been added to create the best that Volkswagen can offer for their upcoming new models.
